Every week we spotlight one plant from our collection — its story, what makes it special, and everything you need to know to grow it well.

This week: ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

---

The Plant That Refuses to Die

If there were a houseplant survival contest, the ZZ plant would win. It stores water in underground rhizomes — fat, potato-like structures — that sustain the plant through weeks or months of neglect. It photosynthesises slowly and efficiently, making it functional in light conditions that would starve most other plants. And it somehow manages to look glossy, elegant, and expensive while doing it.

The ZZ plant is the ideal plant for Singaporeans who travel frequently (weekends in Batam, long work trips), work unpredictable hours, or have simply killed too many plants and want something that will actually live.

It's also exceptionally well-suited to Singapore's climate: our year-round warmth (26–34°C) is very close to the ZZ's native eastern Africa, where it evolved in seasonally dry conditions. It thrives in our heat, handles our humidity, and — most importantly — forgives our tendency to either over-love or completely forget our plants.

The Secret: Underground Rhizomes

!ZZ plant unpotted showing large potato-like rhizomes — the water storage organs that make it drought tolerant

Unlike most houseplants, ZZ plants don't rely solely on their root system for water storage. They grow bulb-like rhizomes underground — you can see them if you unpot the plant — that store large reserves of water and nutrients.

This is why ZZ plants survive so well without watering:

  • When the soil is dry, the plant draws from its rhizome reserves
  • Growth slows significantly, conserving energy
  • The above-ground plant continues to look healthy for weeks to months

It's the houseplant equivalent of a camel. The rhizomes also make ZZ plants very easy to propagate by division — split the rhizomes apart, pot each piece, and you have multiple new plants.

The Raven ZZ: Black Leaves, Same Easy Care

Boston Fern Plant

The standout variety of recent years is the Raven ZZ (Z. zamiifolia 'Dowon'). Its leaves emerge green and gradually deepen to a near-black purple-green that's unlike any other commonly available houseplant.

The dramatic dark foliage photographs strikingly — it's consistently one of the most popular plants for Singapore interior design content and home styling shots. It contrasts beautifully against the white walls and minimal aesthetics common in Singapore HDB and condo renovations.

And it maintains all the indestructible qualities of the standard green ZZ.

If you want maximum visual impact with minimum care requirements, the Raven ZZ is one of the strongest options available.

ZZ Plant vs. Snake Plant: Which Is Right for Your Singapore Home?

Both are excellent low-maintenance options widely available in Singapore. Here's how they compare:

| Feature | ZZ Plant | Snake Plant |

|---------|---------|-------------|

| Light tolerance | Excellent | Excellent |

| Drought tolerance | Outstanding (weeks to months) | Very good (weeks) |

| Growth rate | Very slow | Slow |

| Height | Spreading, 60–120 cm | Upright, 30–120 cm |

| Leaf style | Oval, glossy, arching stems | Upright, sword-shaped |

| Pet safety | Not pet-safe | Not pet-safe |

| Best for | Very low light, infrequent attention, north-facing HDB | Any conditions, upright structure, shelves |

| Singapore availability | Widely available | Very widely available |

If you can only choose one: both are excellent. The ZZ plant's rhizome water storage makes it slightly more resilient to complete neglect. The snake plant offers more variety in form and size — and our snake plant collection has options for every space.

Light

ZZ plants are genuinely one of the most light-tolerant houseplants available.

| Light Condition | Result | Singapore Example |

|----------------|--------|------------------|

| Very low (dim rooms, only overhead lighting) | Survives for months to years — near-imperceptible growth | North-facing HDB corridor, windowless office |

| Low to medium indirect | Ideal low-maintenance balance | Far from window, beside a north-facing window |

| Bright indirect | Fastest growth; new stems emerging regularly | 1–2m from east/west window, no direct rays |

Avoid: Prolonged direct harsh sun, which can scorch the glossy leaves. Morning sun (east-facing) is fine; strong afternoon west-facing sun through glass can cause scorching.

---

Watering

Water when the soil is completely dry — not just the top few centimetres, but most of the way through the pot. In Singapore's indoor conditions, this is typically every 2–4 weeks.

How to check: Insert a finger all the way to the bottom of the pot. If there's any moisture at depth, wait. Only water when it's dry throughout.

In air-conditioned rooms: AC reduces humidity significantly. Soil dries faster — check every 10–14 days initially and adjust based on your specific conditions.

In naturally ventilated rooms: Singapore's high ambient humidity (75–85%) slows soil drying. You may find the ZZ needs watering only once a month or less.

The most common ZZ mistake: Overwatering. ZZ plants that receive regular watering like a tropical houseplant develop root rot rapidly. Their drought tolerance is a feature, not a suggestion — use it.

---

Soil and Pot

Well-draining potting mix is essential. Add 20–30% perlite to standard mix. Never use dense garden soil.

Terracotta pots are ideal — they're porous and help soil dry faster, supporting the ZZ's need for dry-between-watering conditions. In Singapore's humidity, terracotta helps prevent the soil staying moist for too long.

ZZ plants like being slightly root-bound. Only repot when roots are visibly circling the pot bottom or rhizomes are pushing up through the soil surface.

---

Fertilising

ZZ plants are light feeders. Fertilise once in the active growing season (around March–September in Singapore) — that's it. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half-strength.

Do not overfertilise — excess fertiliser causes brown leaf tips and can damage the rhizomes.

---

Humidity and Temperature

  • Temperature: 20–34°C; thrives in Singapore's year-round warmth
  • Minimum: Avoid prolonged exposure below 15°C — relevant if running heavy AC at night
  • Humidity: Extremely tolerant; adapts to both Singapore's ambient 75–85% humidity and air-conditioned rooms at 50–60%

No misting needed. No humidifier needed. One of the most adaptable plants to Singapore's varied indoor environments — from cool CBD office to warm, ventilated HDB.

---

Is the ZZ Plant Toxic?

Yes — ZZ plants contain calcium oxalate crystals that are irritating if ingested, causing mouth pain, nausea, and vomiting. The sap can also irritate skin and eyes.

Practical precautions:

  • Keep away from pets who chew plants and small children
  • Wash hands after handling (particularly after repotting)
  • The toxicity is unpleasant but rarely severe in adults — it's most concerning for pets and young children

For pet-safe alternatives, see our pet-friendly plant collection — spider plants, Boston ferns, and calatheas are great non-toxic options.

| Problem | Likely Cause | Fix |

|---------|-------------|-----|

| Yellow leaves | Overwatering (most common) | Let soil dry completely; check for root rot |

| Drooping or falling stems | Overwatering (soft base) or underwatering (firm, dry base) | Check base firmness; water if dry, check for rot if soft |

| Brown leaf tips | Overfertilisation, fluoride in tap water, or very low humidity | Use filtered water; reduce fertiliser; not usually serious |

| No new growth for months | Normal in cool/low-light periods | Move to brighter spot; growth resumes in warmer months |

| Leggy growth (thin stems, few leaves) | Insufficient light | Move to a brighter location |

!ZZ plant with yellow lower leaves — showing the classic symptom of overwatering that Singapore growers encounter most often

Yellow lower leaves are almost always overwatering. ZZ plants need much less water than most houseplants.
