The Plant That Refuses to Die

If there were a houseplant survival contest, the ZZ plant would win. It stores water in underground rhizomes — fat, potato-like structures — that sustain the plant through weeks or months of neglect. It photosynthesises slowly and efficiently, making it functional in light conditions that would starve most other plants. And it somehow manages to look glossy, elegant, and expensive while doing it.

The ZZ plant is the ideal plant for Singaporeans who travel frequently (weekends in Batam, long work trips), work unpredictable hours, or have simply killed too many plants and want something that will actually live.

It's also exceptionally well-suited to Singapore's climate: our year-round warmth (26–34°C) is very close to the ZZ's native eastern Africa, where it evolved in seasonally dry conditions. The Secret: Underground Rhizomes

Unlike most houseplants, ZZ plants don't rely solely on their root system for water storage. They grow bulb-like rhizomes underground — you can see them if you unpot the plant — that store large reserves of water and nutrients.

This is why ZZ plants survive so well without watering:

• When the soil is dry, the plant draws from its rhizome reserves
• Growth slows significantly, conserving energy
• The above-ground plant continues to look healthy for weeks to months

It's the houseplant equivalent of a camel. The rhizomes also make ZZ plants very easy to propagate by division — split the rhizomes apart, pot each piece, and you have multiple new plants.

Both are excellent low-maintenance options widely available in Singapore. Here's how they compare:

Care Guide

Light

ZZ plants are genuinely one of the most light-tolerant houseplants available.

Avoid: Prolonged direct harsh sun, which can scorch the glossy leaves. Morning sun (east-facing) is fine; strong afternoon west-facing sun through glass can cause scorching.

Watering

Water when the soil is completely dry — not just the top few centimetres, but most of the way through the pot. In Singapore's indoor conditions, this is typically every 2–4 weeks.

How to check: Insert a finger all the way to the bottom of the pot. If there's any moisture at depth, wait. Only water when it's dry throughout.

In air-conditioned rooms: AC reduces humidity significantly. Soil dries faster — check every 10–14 days initially and adjust based on your specific conditions.

In naturally ventilated rooms: Singapore's high ambient humidity (75–85%) slows soil drying. You may find the ZZ needs watering only once a month or less.

The most common ZZ mistake: Overwatering. ZZ plants that receive regular watering like a tropical houseplant develop root rot rapidly. Their drought tolerance is a feature, not a suggestion — use it.

Soil and Pot

Well-draining potting mix is essential. Add 20–30% perlite to standard mix. Never use dense garden soil.

Terracotta pots are ideal — they're porous and help soil dry faster, supporting the ZZ's need for dry-between-watering conditions. In Singapore's humidity, terracotta helps prevent the soil staying moist for too long.

ZZ plants like being slightly root-bound. Only repot when roots are visibly circling the pot bottom or rhizomes are pushing up through the soil surface.

ZZ plants are light feeders. Fertilise once in the active growing season (around March–September in Singapore) — that's it. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half-strength.

Yes — ZZ plants contain calcium oxalate crystals that are irritating if ingested, causing mouth pain, nausea, and vomiting. The sap can also irritate skin and eyes.

• Wash hands after handling (particularly after repotting)
• The toxicity is unpleasant but rarely severe in adults — it's most concerning for pets and young children
