Rubber Plant Care Guide for Singapore | Tumbleweed Plants Singapore

Posted on April 10 2026

The Rubber Plant — Ficus elastica — is one of the great indoor trees. In the wild, it grows to 30 metres or more, a towering rainforest giant with aerial roots and a spreading canopy. Indoors, it stays manageable — typically 1-2 metres — while retaining the thick, glossy leaves and upright form that make it look like a proper tree rather than just another houseplant.

The Rubber Plant earned its common name from the milky latex sap it produces when cut — the same family of compounds used to make natural rubber, though commercial rubber now comes from a different species (Hevea brasiliensis). What you get from your Ficus elastica is not rubber, but an extraordinarily handsome, low-fuss indoor tree that thrives in Singapore's tropical conditions.

Varieties

Several cultivars are commonly available in Singapore:

Ficus elastica 'Robusta' — The classic. Large, dark green, glossy leaves. The most vigorous and forgiving variety.

Ficus elastica 'Burgundy' — Deep, nearly black leaves with a dark red underside. Dramatic and moody.

Ficus elastica 'Tineke' — Variegated with cream, green, and pink patches. Striking but needs more light than solid-green varieties.

Ficus elastica 'Ruby' — Similar to Tineke but with more pronounced pink and red tones. The most colourful variety.

Ficus elastica 'Shivereana' — Mottled green and cream leaves with an unusual, almost camouflage-like pattern.

All varieties share the same basic care requirements, though variegated types (Tineke, Ruby, Shivereana) need brighter light to maintain their colouring.

Light

Bright indirect light — Ideal. Produces the largest leaves and most compact growth. Near a window with filtered light.

Medium light — Fine for solid-green varieties (Robusta, Burgundy). Growth slows and leaves may be slightly smaller.

Low light — The plant survives but does not thrive. Leggy growth, smaller leaves, and variegated varieties lose their colouring.

Direct sun — Tolerated for a few hours (morning sun is best). Extended afternoon sun can scorch leaves, especially on variegated varieties.

Key point: If your Rubber Plant is getting leggy — long stems with widely spaced leaves — it needs more light.

Watering

Rubber Plants prefer a wet-dry cycle — thorough watering followed by a drying period.

Schedule in Singapore:

  • Water when the top 3-5cm of soil is dry
  • Every 7-10 days in naturally ventilated rooms
  • Every 10-14 days in air-conditioned rooms

Technique:

  • Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom
  • Empty saucers within 30 minutes
  • Never let the pot sit in standing water

Overwatering signs: Yellow lower leaves, soft stems, leaf drop, mushy base.

Underwatering signs: Drooping leaves, curling edges, dry and crispy leaf tips.

The droop test: Rubber Plant leaves droop slightly when thirsty — they angle downward instead of holding horizontally. Water thoroughly and they recover within a day.

Soil

A well-draining mix is essential:

  • 60% potting mix
  • 20% perlite
  • 20% orchid bark or coarse sand

The Rubber Plant's thick roots are susceptible to rot in heavy, waterlogged soil. Good drainage is non-negotiable.

Humidity

Singapore's humidity (70-80%) is excellent for Rubber Plants — they are tropical trees that evolved in humid rainforests. No supplemental humidity needed.

In air-conditioned rooms, the lower humidity is still adequate. Rubber Plants are more tolerant of dry air than many tropical houseplants.

Temperature

Singapore's year-round 26-32°C is within the Rubber Plant's ideal range. It thrives in tropical warmth. Even air-conditioned rooms (22-25°C) are fine — the Rubber Plant handles this temperature range without complaint.

Fertilising

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth
  • Reduce to every 8-10 weeks during slower periods (if any — Singapore's consistent warmth means year-round growth for most Rubber Plants)
  • Do not over-fertilise — excess fertiliser causes leaf tip burn and salt buildup

Pruning

Pruning is the key to shaping your Rubber Plant. Left unpruned, it grows as a single tall stem — which can look bare at the base.

To encourage branching:

  1. Cut the main stem at the desired height with clean, sharp pruning shears
  2. The plant will produce 2-3 new branches below the cut
  3. Each new branch can be pruned again later for a bushier form

When to prune: Any time during active growth. In Singapore, this is essentially year-round.

The sap: Rubber Plants bleed white latex sap when cut. It is mildly irritating to skin and can stain surfaces. Wear gloves and place newspaper under the plant when pruning. The sap stops flowing within minutes.

Leaf cleaning: The large, flat leaves collect dust. Wipe with a damp cloth every 2-4 weeks. Clean leaves photosynthesize more efficiently and look dramatically better.

Propagation

Stem Cutting

  1. Cut a stem section with 2-3 leaves
  2. Allow the cut end to dry for an hour (to stop latex flow)
  3. Place in water or moist perlite
  4. Roots develop in 4-6 weeks
  5. Transfer to soil when roots are 5-8cm long

Air Layering

For larger, more established propagations:

  1. Choose a spot on the stem where you want roots
  2. Make a shallow upward cut (about one-third through the stem)
  3. Insert a toothpick to hold the cut open
  4. Wrap with damp sphagnum moss and cover with plastic wrap
  5. Keep moss moist for 4-8 weeks until roots develop
  6. Cut below the new roots and pot as a new plant

Air layering produces a larger, more established new plant than stem cuttings.

Common Problems

Leaf Drop

Cause: Environmental stress — cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, overwatering, or being moved to a new location.

Fix: Rubber Plants dislike change. Once you find a good spot, leave the plant there. If leaves drop after a move, give it 2-3 weeks to adjust. New leaves will emerge.

Yellow Leaves

Lower leaves: Often natural ageing — Rubber Plants drop older leaves as they grow taller.

Multiple leaves: Overwatering (check roots), root-bound stress (repot if roots are circling), or sudden environmental change.

Brown Spots or Edges

Cause: Sunburn (direct sun on variegated varieties), over-fertilising, or inconsistent watering.

Fix: Move to indirect light, flush soil, and establish a consistent watering routine.

Leggy Growth

Cause: Insufficient light. The plant stretches toward light, producing long internodes.

Fix: Move to brighter light and prune to encourage branching.

Pests

Rubber Plants are relatively pest-resistant but can attract:

  • Scale insects — Brown bumps on stems and leaf undersides. Remove with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab.
  • Mealybugs — White cottony masses in leaf joints. Treat with neem oil or rubbing alcohol.
  • Spider mites — Fine webbing on leaves. Increase humidity and wash leaves regularly.

Styling

The Rubber Plant's upright, tree-like form makes it a natural statement piece:

  • Floor plant — A 1-1.5m Rubber Plant beside a sofa or in a corner creates vertical interest
  • Entry plant — A bushy Rubber Plant near the entrance makes a strong first impression
  • Office plant — Large enough to define a space, tolerant enough to handle office conditions
  • Paired — Two matching Rubber Plants flanking a doorway or window

Pot choice: The thick trunk and large leaves look best in simple, substantial pots — concrete, terracotta, or matte ceramic in neutral tones.

Is Rubber Plant Toxic?

Yes. The latex sap is mildly toxic if ingested and can irritate skin and eyes. Keep away from pets that chew plants and young children. Not severely dangerous, but ingestion can cause nausea and vomiting.
