String of Pearls — Senecio rowleyanus (now reclassified as Curio rowleyanus) — is one of the most visually striking trailing plants in existence. Its spherical, bead-like leaves strung along thin, cascading stems create a curtain effect that looks like nature designed a piece of jewellery. Draped from a high shelf or hanging planter, a healthy String of Pearls is mesmerising.

But String of Pearls has a reputation for being finicky. It is a succulent — drought-tolerant by nature — yet it dies quickly when treated like a typical succulent. In Singapore's humidity, the care approach needs specific adjustments. This guide covers what actually works for growing String of Pearls in our tropical climate.

Understanding the Plant

String of Pearls is native to the dry parts of southwest Africa, where it grows as a ground-creeping plant in the partial shade of rocks and larger vegetation. The spherical leaves are an adaptation to minimise water loss while maximising water storage — each pearl is essentially a tiny water reservoir.

The key insight: it is a succulent that evolved in partial shade, not full sun. This makes its light requirements different from most succulents. And its thin stems are far less drought-tolerant than its water-storing pearls suggest.

Light

Bright indirect light — Optimal. Near an east-facing window or within one metre of a bright north-facing window. The pearls stay plump and round, the stems grow evenly, and the plant cascades beautifully.

Some direct morning sun — Beneficial. One to two hours of gentle morning sun is fine and promotes compact growth.

Direct afternoon sun — Risky in Singapore. The intense afternoon heat can scorch the thin stems and cause the pearls to shrivel. If the pearls develop brown, flat patches, they are getting too much direct sun.

Low light — Poor results. The stems stretch, gaps between pearls widen, and the plant becomes sparse and stringy. String of Pearls needs more light than many trailing plants.

Watering

This is where most people fail with String of Pearls. It is a succulent, but its thin stems cannot survive the extended drought that a Snake Plant or Echeveria handles.

Schedule in Singapore:

  • Water when the pearls look slightly less plump — they transition from perfectly round to slightly oval when thirsty
  • Every seven to fourteen days depending on light and pot size
  • More frequently in brighter, warmer conditions; less in shade or AC

Technique:

  • Water thoroughly until liquid drains from the bottom
  • Ensure the pot has excellent drainage
  • Water at the soil level — avoid getting water trapped between the pearls and stems
  • Empty saucers immediately

The visual cue: Learn to read the pearls. Fully hydrated pearls are round, firm, and have a slight translucency through the "window" (the thin transparent line on each pearl). Dehydrated pearls become slightly wrinkled or flatten. Water at the first sign of flattening.

Overwatering signs (the bigger risk in Singapore):

  • Pearls become mushy and translucent
  • Stems turn soft and brown at the base
  • A sour smell from the soil
  • Whole sections of the strand dying from the base upward

Underwatering signs:

  • Pearls become shrivelled, wrinkled, or flat
  • Gaps widen between pearls as stems dry and contract
  • Slow growth

Soil

Fast-draining soil is non-negotiable:

  • 40% potting soil
  • 40% perlite or coarse sand
  • 20% orchid bark or pumice

The mix should dry within three to five days of watering. String of Pearls roots rot quickly in moisture-retentive soil — standard potting mix without amendments will kill it.

Pot Selection

Drainage holes are mandatory. No exceptions.

Terracotta is ideal. The porous material wicks moisture from the soil, providing extra protection against overwatering.

Shallow, wide pots suit the plant's shallow root system better than deep pots. Deep pots hold excess moisture at the bottom where roots cannot access it.

Hanging planters are the classic display method — choose lightweight plastic or ceramic with drainage.

Here is the Singapore-specific challenge: String of Pearls prefers lower humidity (40-50%) than our ambient climate provides. In non-AC rooms with 70-80% humidity, the risk of fungal issues increases.

Solutions:

  • Grow in air-conditioned rooms (the lower humidity actually benefits this plant)
  • Ensure excellent air circulation — a small fan nearby helps
  • Avoid misting (never mist String of Pearls)
  • Keep the soil on the drier side in humid environments

Fertilising

Light feeder:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks during active growth
  • Reduce or stop during slower periods
  • Over-fertilising causes weak, leggy growth

Propagation

String of Pearls propagates easily from stem cuttings:

Soil Propagation

  1. Cut a healthy stem section 10-15cm long
  2. Coil the stem on top of moist, well-draining soil
  3. Pin down at points using small wire or hairpins so the stem contacts the soil
  4. Roots develop from the nodes along the stem in two to four weeks
  5. Keep the soil barely moist — not wet

Water Propagation

  1. Cut a stem with several nodes
  2. Place the cut ends in shallow water (just enough to cover a few nodes)
  3. Roots appear in one to three weeks
  4. Transfer to soil once established

Tip: Propagate regularly to maintain a full, bushy plant. Trim leggy strands and root the cuttings back into the same pot.

Common Problems

Shrivelling Pearls

Underwatering if the soil is dry and the pearls are wrinkled. Water thoroughly.

Root rot if the soil is wet and the pearls are mushy. The roots are damaged and cannot deliver water to the pearls despite wet soil. Check roots, trim rot, repot in dry soil.

Bald Sections (Stems Without Pearls)

Caused by underwatering, low light, or the natural ageing of the stem base. Trim bald sections and propagate the healthy tips.

Mushy Base

Stem rot from overwatering. Cut away all soft, brown material. Re-root healthy sections in fresh, dry soil. Reduce watering.

Flat, Brown Pearls

Sunburn from direct sun. Move to indirect light.

Pests

  • Mealybugs — hide between the pearls. Treat with isopropyl alcohol applied with a cotton swab.
  • Aphids — on new growth. Spray with insecticidal soap.
  • Fungus gnats — in overly moist soil. Let soil dry more between waterings.

Is String of Pearls Toxic?

Yes. Mildly toxic if ingested by pets or humans. The sap can irritate skin. Keep out of reach of cats (who are often attracted to the dangling strands).

Styling

String of Pearls is at its best when displayed from height:

  • Hanging planter: The classic. A full String of Pearls cascading from a ceiling hook creates a living curtain of beads.
  • High shelf edge: Let the strands trail over a bookshelf or kitchen shelf.
  • Macrame hanger: The bohemian styling natural. Pearl strands through macrame creates a textured, layered display.
  • Windowsill: In a small pot on a bright windowsill where the strands trail down the wall.

If String of Pearls proves challenging, consider these relatives with similar aesthetics but potentially easier care:

  • String of Dolphins (Senecio peregrinus) — dolphin-shaped leaves, slightly more forgiving
  • String of Bananas (Senecio radicans) — banana-shaped leaves, more tolerant of lower light
  • String of Watermelons (Senecio herreianus) — oval, watermelon-striped leaves

String of Pearls is not the easiest plant to grow, but it is one of the most rewarding when you get it right. The visual effect of those cascading beads — catching light, swaying gently, looking like something from a fairy tale — is worth the learning curve. Master the watering (less than you think, more than you fear), give it bright indirect light and fast-draining soil, and you will have a plant that stops visitors in their tracks.
