One of the most common questions we get before a first order: *"How does a living plant survive being put in a box and delivered to my home?"
It's a fair question. At Tumbleweed Plants, we've delivered plants to HDB flats, condos, landed homes, and offices all across Singapore. Here's exactly how we do it — and why local same-day delivery is one of the best ways to receive a plant in perfect condition.
---
Why Singapore Plant Delivery Is Different
Most online plant horror stories you'll read come from international or long-distance shipping — plants in boxes for 5–7 days, temperature swings from warehouse cold to summer heat, customs delays.
In Singapore, we have a significant advantage: the island is small, our delivery network is fast, and our tropical climate (26–34°C year-round) is already ideal for most tropical houseplants. A plant that leaves our nursery at 9am can be at your door by noon in perfect condition.
| Factor | International Shipping | Tumbleweed Singapore Delivery |
|--------|----------------------|------------------------------|
| Transit time | 3–7 days | Same day or next day |
| Temperature risk | High (heat waves, cold snaps) | Low (stable tropical climate) |
| Customs/delays | Common | None |
| Packing complexity | Extensive (moisture retention critical) | Standard protective packing |
| Arrival condition | Variable | Consistently high |

Step 1: Plant Selection and Pre-Ship Inspection
Every plant that goes out for delivery is individually inspected before packing. We check:
- Overall health and vigour — is the plant actively healthy, with firm leaves and stems?
- Pest check — we inspect leaves (top and underside), stems, and the soil surface for any signs of pests
- Root stability — is the plant well-established in its pot and unlikely to tip?
- Cosmetic condition — any loose or damaged leaves that might break in transit are removed
Plants that don't pass inspection aren't dispatched. We'd rather delay an order than send something that won't arrive in great condition.
---
Step 2: Watering Before Dispatch
We water plants 24–48 hours before packing. The goal is to ensure the plant is fully hydrated for transit, but with soil that is moist rather than soaking wet.
Why not water right before packing? Soaking-wet soil is heavy, more prone to spilling, and can cause root stress during transit. "Moist but not soggy" is the ideal state for a plant heading into a delivery box.
Singapore note: Our ambient humidity (typically 75–85%) helps here — plants don't dehydrate as rapidly as they would in a dry climate, so there's less urgency to keep soil wet for transit.
---
Step 3: Pot Preparation
Preventing soil spills is one of the most important parts of a good plant pack. We:
- Secure drainage holes to prevent soil from falling out during handling
- Wrap the soil surface and root ball to keep everything stable
- Use pot sleeves or inner bracing to prevent the nursery pot from shifting inside the outer box
A plant that arrives with its root ball intact — soil in place, roots undisturbed — recovers much faster than one where soil has shifted and roots have dried out.
---
Step 4: Foliage Protection
!Protective paper wrapping around a large-leaved plant before it's placed in the delivery box
For plants with large or delicate leaves (monsteras, fiddle leaf figs, bird of paradise), we add protective wrapping around the foliage before the plant goes into the box. This prevents:
- Leaves bending or breaking against box walls
- Leaf tips getting crushed under packing material
- Multiple plants (in multi-plant orders) rubbing against each other
For smaller, robust plants (pothos, succulents, snake plants), minimal wrapping is needed — their compact form protects them naturally.
---
Step 5: The Box
Box sizing matters more than most people realise. A box that's too large lets the plant shift and tip during transit; a box that's too small compresses the plant and damages leaves.
We select box sizes to match each plant, and use crumpled paper or biodegradable packing material to fill any gaps and keep the plant upright and stable. For tall or top-heavy plants, we ensure the box height is matched to the plant — the plant should not be able to tip over inside the box.
---
Step 6: Temperature Considerations
Singapore's year-round warmth (26–34°C) means we don't need heat packs or cold-weather protocols that international shippers rely on. The temperature range here is, in fact, close to ideal for most tropical houseplants.
What we do watch for:
- Delivery during Singapore's brief cooler monsoon periods (November–January): temperatures can drop to 22–24°C in wet weather — still fine for tropical plants, but we ensure packing is well-sealed
- Extreme afternoon heat for outdoor deliveries (above 35°C in direct sun): for same-day deliveries, we aim to complete delivery before peak afternoon heat where possible
We do not currently ship internationally or to non-tropical climates.
---
Step 7: Delivery Method
We offer same-day delivery across Singapore — our most popular option and the best way to receive a plant in peak condition. Plants can go from our nursery to your door the same morning you order.
For standard delivery, most Singapore addresses are reached within 1–2 days.
We dispatch early in the week (Monday–Wednesday orders prioritised for freshest delivery) to avoid any risk of weekend transit delays. Same-day orders placed before [cutoff time] are dispatched the same day.

What to Expect When Your Package Arrives
Open it immediately. Don't leave the box closed for more than a few hours — plants need light and air circulation.
Don't panic if it looks tired. Some minor wilting or leaf movement after transit is completely normal. Most plants perk up within 24–48 hours once watered and placed in appropriate light. Singapore's warmth actually helps recovery — plants bounce back faster in our climate than they would in a cold temperate environment.
Take photos if there's damage. If anything looks wrong, photograph it before unpacking and contact us within 48 hours.
Water if dry, wait if moist. Check the soil — if dry, water thoroughly. If moist, wait until the top 2–3 cm dry before watering.

After unboxing, give your plant a drink if the soil is dry, then place it in bright indirect light for its first week in its new home.
