How to Care for Monstera Adansonii in Singapore

Where deliciosa makes a statement with its massive split leaves, adansonii charms with its smaller, hole-riddled foliage and vigorous vining habit. It climbs, it trails, it fills a trellis in months — and in Singapore's tropical climate, it grows with an enthusiasm that borders on aggressive.

The fenestrations — those characteristic oval holes in each leaf — are not just decorative. In the wild, they allow light to pass through the canopy to lower leaves and reduce wind resistance during tropical storms. Indoors, they simply look spectacular, especially when backlit by a window.

Why Monstera Adansonii Thrives in Singapore

This plant is native to Central and South American tropical forests, where it grows as an epiphytic vine climbing tree trunks in warm, humid, partially shaded conditions. Singapore replicates these conditions almost perfectly:

• Temperature: Adansonii loves 20-30°C. Singapore delivers this year-round.
• Humidity: 60-80% is ideal. Singapore's outdoor humidity exceeds this, and even air-conditioned interiors typically stay above 50%.
• No dormancy. In temperate climates, growth slows or stops in winter. In Singapore, Monstera adansonii grows twelve months a year.

Light

Monstera adansonii performs best in bright indirect light — the sweet spot that produces the most fenestrations and the fastest growth.

Ideal placement:

• One to two metres from an east or north-facing window
• Beside a window with sheer curtains
• In a well-lit room, away from direct sunbeams

Direct sunlight burns the thin leaves quickly. Even 30 minutes of direct afternoon sun can cause brown patches. Morning sun (soft, brief) is generally fine.

Low light is tolerated but not ideal. Growth slows significantly, new leaves emerge smaller with fewer holes, and the vine becomes leggy with long gaps between leaves.

Pests
