How to Care for Monstera Adansonii in Singapore

Posted on April 09 2026

Monstera adansonii — the Swiss Cheese Vine — is the more petite, more prolific cousin of the iconic Monstera deliciosa. Where deliciosa makes a statement with its massive split leaves, adansonii charms with its smaller, hole-riddled foliage and vigorous vining habit. It climbs, it trails, it fills a trellis in months — and in Singapore's tropical climate, it grows with an enthusiasm that borders on aggressive.

The fenestrations — those characteristic oval holes in each leaf — are not just decorative. In the wild, they allow light to pass through the canopy to lower leaves and reduce wind resistance during tropical storms. Indoors, they simply look spectacular, especially when backlit by a window.

Why Monstera Adansonii Thrives in Singapore

This plant is native to Central and South American tropical forests, where it grows as an epiphytic vine climbing tree trunks in warm, humid, partially shaded conditions. Singapore replicates these conditions almost perfectly:

  • Temperature: Adansonii loves 20-30°C. Singapore delivers this year-round.
  • Humidity: 60-80% is ideal. Singapore's outdoor humidity exceeds this, and even air-conditioned interiors typically stay above 50%.
  • No dormancy. In temperate climates, growth slows or stops in winter. In Singapore, Monstera adansonii grows twelve months a year.

Monstera adansonii performs best in bright indirect light — the sweet spot that produces the most fenestrations and the fastest growth.

Ideal placement:

  • One to two metres from an east or north-facing window
  • Beside a window with sheer curtains
  • In a well-lit room, away from direct sunbeams

Direct sunlight burns the thin leaves quickly. Even 30 minutes of direct afternoon sun can cause brown patches. Morning sun (soft, brief) is generally fine.

Low light is tolerated but not ideal. Growth slows significantly, new leaves emerge smaller with fewer holes, and the vine becomes leggy with long gaps between leaves.

The fenestration rule: More light (indirect) = more holes. Plants in lower light produce leaves with smaller or fewer fenestrations. If you want those dramatically perforated leaves, give the plant the brightest indirect spot you have.

Watering

Monstera adansonii likes consistently moist soil — not wet, not dry. It is more sensitive to both over and underwatering than its cousin deliciosa.

Schedule in Singapore:

  • Check soil every three to four days
  • Water when the top two to three centimetres feel dry
  • Typically every five to seven days in bright conditions, slightly less in lower light

Technique:

  • Water thoroughly until liquid drains from the bottom
  • Allow excess to drain completely — never let the pot sit in standing water
  • Use room-temperature water

Overwatering signs:

  • Yellow leaves, especially lower ones
  • Soft, dark stems
  • Mushy roots when you check

Underwatering signs:

  • Crispy brown leaf edges
  • Curling leaves
  • Drooping but firm foliage

Humidity

Adansonii appreciates humidity above 60%. In most Singapore homes without AC, ambient humidity is sufficient. In air-conditioned rooms:

  • Group with other plants for collective transpiration
  • Use a pebble tray beneath the pot
  • Run a small humidifier nearby
  • Mist in the morning (not evening, to avoid fungal issues)

Low humidity shows up as brown, crispy leaf edges — cosmetically unpleasant but not life-threatening.

Soil

A well-draining, chunky mix that holds moisture without compacting:

  • 40% potting soil
  • 25% perlite
  • 20% orchid bark
  • 15% charcoal or coco coir

This aroid mix provides the aeration that epiphytic roots need while retaining enough moisture to keep the plant happy between waterings.

Support Structures

In the wild, Monstera adansonii climbs trees. Indoors, providing a support structure dramatically improves growth — leaves grow larger, fenestrations become more pronounced, and the plant develops a fuller, more impressive form.

Options:

Moss pole — The gold standard. The moist surface provides aerial roots with both support and hydration. Mist the pole when you water to keep it damp. Leaves produced while climbing a moss pole are noticeably larger than those on a trailing plant.

Coir pole — More affordable and widely available in Singapore. Does not retain moisture as well as sphagnum moss but provides adequate support.

Trellis — A small bamboo or wire trellis works well for training the vine in a fan shape. Produces a beautiful, spread-out display.

Wooden plank — Mount the plant on a flat piece of wood for a living wall art effect. The aerial roots grip the surface naturally.

No support (trailing) — Adansonii also works beautifully as a trailing plant from a hanging basket or high shelf. Leaves will be smaller than on a climbing plant, but the cascading effect is lovely.

Fertilising

Monstera adansonii is a moderate to heavy feeder during active growth (year-round in Singapore).

  • Use a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) diluted to half strength
  • Apply every two to three weeks during active growth
  • Reduce to monthly if growth visibly slows
  • Always water the soil before applying fertiliser to prevent root burn
  • Flush soil with plain water every two months to clear salt buildup

Adansonii benefits from regular pruning to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth:

  • Cut above a node to encourage new branches below the cut
  • Remove leggy, leafless sections that detract from the plant's appearance
  • Trim any yellowing or damaged leaves close to the main stem
  • Every cutting is a propagation opportunity — root the trimmed sections and add them back to the pot for a fuller plant

Propagation

One of the easiest plants to propagate. Stem cuttings root quickly and reliably in Singapore's warm conditions.

Water Propagation

  1. Cut a stem segment with at least one node and one leaf
  2. Place in a jar of water with the node submerged
  3. Position in bright indirect light
  4. Change water every three to four days
  5. Roots appear in 7-14 days in Singapore's warmth
  6. Transfer to soil when roots reach 5-8cm

Soil Propagation

  1. Take cuttings as above
  2. Plant directly in moist, well-draining soil with the node buried 2-3cm
  3. Cover loosely with a clear plastic bag for humidity
  4. Keep soil moist and position in bright indirect light
  5. Roots establish in two to four weeks
  6. Remove the humidity cover once new growth appears

Pro tip: Plant multiple rooted cuttings back into the mother pot to create a bushier, fuller plant.

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

  • One or two lower leaves: Natural ageing. Old leaves yellow and drop to redirect energy. Normal.
  • Multiple leaves: Usually overwatering. Check roots for rot.
  • New leaves emerging yellow: Possible nutrient deficiency. Resume or increase fertilising.

Brown Leaf Tips and Edges

Low humidity is the most common cause. Address by grouping plants, using pebble trays, or running a humidifier. Can also result from inconsistent watering or salt buildup from fertiliser.

Leggy Growth

Not enough light. Move closer to a window or provide a grow light. Prune leggy sections and propagate the cuttings.

Black Spots on Leaves

Usually overwatering or root rot. Can also be bacterial leaf spot from water sitting on leaves. Improve drainage, reduce watering frequency, and water at the base rather than overhead.

Pests

Thrips are the most common pest on Monstera adansonii in Singapore. Look for silvery streaks and tiny dark dots on leaves. Treat with neem oil or spinosad.

Spider mites appear in dry, air-conditioned environments. Fine webbing on leaf undersides. Increase humidity and treat with insecticidal soap.

Fungus gnats in moist soil. Let the top layer dry between waterings and use yellow sticky traps.

Styling Monstera Adansonii

The versatility of this plant makes it a stylist's dream:

  • Climbing a moss pole: Creates an impressive vertical display on the floor or a tabletop. The larger, more fenestrated leaves on a climbing plant are the variety's most striking form.
  • Trailing from a shelf: The cascading vines soften bookshelf edges and create movement.
  • In a hanging planter: Suspended near a window, the fenestrated leaves create beautiful shadow patterns when backlit.
  • Trained on a trellis: Fan-shaped growth on a trellis creates a living screen or room divider.
  • On a desk: A small specimen in a decorative pot brings life to any workspace.
