Philodendron Care Guide for Singapore | Tumbleweed Plants Singapore

Posted on April 10 2026

Philodendron is one of the largest and most diverse plant genera, with over 400 species ranging from compact desk plants to massive climbing vines with leaves over a metre long. The name means "tree lover" in Greek — a reference to their natural habit of climbing up tropical forest trees toward the light.

For Singapore plant owners, Philodendrons are among the most rewarding indoor plants. They are generally forgiving, grow well in our humidity, come in an extraordinary range of leaf shapes and sizes, and reward good care with impressive, visible growth. Whether you want a small trailing vine on a shelf or a statement climber on a moss pole, there is a Philodendron for it.

Types of Philodendron

Climbing / Vining Philodendrons

These grow as vines that climb or trail, depending on whether you provide support.

Philodendron hederaceum (Heartleaf Philodendron) — The classic. Heart-shaped, dark green leaves on trailing vines. Virtually unkillable. The 'Brasil' variety has bright yellow-green variegation.

Philodendron micans — Velvety, iridescent leaves that shift between bronze, green, and copper depending on the light. One of the most beautiful trailing plants.

Philodendron gloriosum — Large, velvety dark green leaves with striking white veins. A terrestrial crawler rather than a true climber.

Philodendron verrucosum — Heart-shaped velvety leaves with prominent veins and fuzzy petioles. A collector favourite.

Self-Heading (Non-Climbing) Philodendrons

These grow in an upright, bushy form without needing support.

Philodendron 'Birkin' — Compact, with dark green leaves pinstriped in white. Each leaf develops unique striping.

Philodendron 'Pink Princess' — Dark leaves with striking pink variegation. The most sought-after Philodendron for collectors.

Philodendron 'Imperial Green' — Large, glossy dark green leaves in a neat rosette. A reliable, unfussy option for floor-level display.

Philodendron xanadu — Deeply lobed leaves on a compact, bushy plant. Excellent for larger displays.

Light

Philodendrons are adapted to the dappled light of tropical forest understorey — making them excellent for typical Singapore indoor conditions.

Bright indirect light — Optimal. Produces the fastest growth, largest leaves, and best variegation (for variegated types).

Medium indirect light — Good for most species. Growth slows slightly but the plant remains healthy.

Low light — Tolerated by the toughest varieties (Heartleaf, Brasil) but not ideal. Variegated varieties lose their colour in low light.

Direct sun — Avoid for most species. Morning sun (1-2 hours) is fine, but afternoon direct sun scorches leaves.

Climbing Philodendrons and light: In nature, these climb trees to reach brighter light. Providing a moss pole and good light encourages larger leaves. In low light without support, leaves stay small.

Watering

Philodendrons prefer evenly moist soil that dries slightly between waterings — not soggy, not bone-dry.

Schedule in Singapore:

  • Water when the top 3-5cm of soil is dry
  • Every 7-14 days for most varieties
  • More frequently in bright locations or terracotta pots
  • Less frequently in AC rooms or low-light spots

Technique:

  • Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom
  • Empty saucers after 30 minutes
  • Avoid getting water into the crown of self-heading varieties

Overwatering signs: Yellow lower leaves, soft stems, soggy soil, root rot.

Underwatering signs: Drooping, wilting leaves that recover after watering. Dry, curling leaf edges.

Soil

A well-draining, airy mix:

  • 50% quality potting mix
  • 25% perlite
  • 25% orchid bark or coco chips

Philodendrons are epiphytic or semi-epiphytic in nature — their roots need air as well as moisture. Dense, compact soil suffocates the roots.

Humidity

Philodendrons love Singapore's humidity. Most species thrive at 60-80% — which is our ambient range. In non-AC rooms, humidity is rarely a concern.

In AC rooms: Humidity may drop to 40-50%. Most Philodendrons tolerate this, but velvet-leaved varieties (micans, gloriosum, verrucosum) prefer higher humidity. Group plants together or use a humidifier.

Moderate feeders:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4-6 weeks
  • Year-round in Singapore (continuous growing season)
  • Reduce if you notice salt buildup on soil surface or leaf tip browning

Climbing Support

Climbing Philodendrons develop larger, more mature leaves when given something to climb. In nature, they climb tree trunks. Indoors, options include:

Moss pole — The most common and effective option. A pole wrapped in sphagnum moss that you keep moist. Aerial roots grip the moss and draw moisture.

Coco coir pole — Similar to moss pole but uses coconut fibre. Requires less moisture maintenance.

Wooden plank or board — A flat board that the plant can climb. Creates a different aesthetic — the plant spreads across the surface.

Trellis — Wire or wooden trellis for plants that vine rather than climb via aerial roots.

Without support: Climbing Philodendrons trail downward or grow along surfaces. The leaves stay juvenile (smaller, less fenestrated or lobed). This is fine aesthetically — a trailing Heartleaf Philodendron is beautiful — but if you want mature leaves, provide support.

Philodendrons propagate easily — one of their most appealing traits.

Stem Cutting in Water

  1. Cut below a node (the bump where leaves and aerial roots emerge)
  2. Include at least one leaf and one node
  3. Place in a jar of water with the node submerged
  4. Change water weekly
  5. Roots appear in 2-4 weeks
  6. Transfer to soil when roots are 5-8cm long

Stem Cutting in Soil

  1. Cut below a node
  2. Let the cut end callus for a few hours
  3. Plant directly in moist, well-draining soil
  4. Keep soil lightly moist (not wet)
  5. New growth indicates successful rooting (3-6 weeks)

Division

For self-heading varieties that produce multiple growth points:

  1. Remove the plant from its pot
  2. Gently separate the growth points, ensuring each has roots
  3. Pot each division in fresh soil

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

The most common complaint. Causes:

  1. Overwatering — the most frequent cause. Check soil and roots.
  2. Natural ageing — occasional lower leaf yellowing is normal as the plant redirects energy to new growth.
  3. Nutrient deficiency — if multiple leaves yellow despite good watering, try fertilising.

Brown Leaf Tips

Usually low humidity (AC rooms) or mineral buildup from tap water. Switch to filtered water and increase humidity if possible.

Leggy Growth

Insufficient light. The plant stretches toward the light source, producing small leaves on long stems. Move to a brighter location. Prune leggy stems and propagate the cuttings.

Small Leaves on Climbing Varieties

The plant needs to climb to produce mature, large leaves. Provide a moss pole and place in brighter light. Without support, climbing Philodendrons produce juvenile foliage.

Pests

  • Mealybugs — white cottony clusters at leaf joints and stem intersections. Treat with rubbing alcohol.
  • Spider mites — tiny dots and webbing on leaf undersides. Spray with insecticidal soap. Increase humidity.
  • Scale — brown, immobile bumps on stems. Remove with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.
  • Thrips — slender insects causing silvery streaks. Treat with neem oil.

Styling

Philodendrons are incredibly versatile:

  • Trailing: Heartleaf or Brasil on a high shelf, cascading down
  • Climbing: Gloriosum or mature Heartleaf on a moss pole as a statement piece
  • Tabletop: Birkin or small self-heading varieties on a desk or side table
  • Floor: Xanadu or Imperial Green in a large pot beside furniture
