An elegant looking tall upright shaped plant with ovate leaves from the Americas. You can find this heat, drought and salt-tolerant plant from South America all the way up to south Florida. It derives its common name from its tendency to grow along the coastline. It’s a fast growing plant with round and broad leaves.
New foliage usually is red in color and, as they age, they change color until they are green with red veins. Seagrape blooms with flowers of ivory to white, which grow in clusters on short stalks. Fruits (in a cluster form) are edible and birds love them!
In America, the sap has been used for dyeing and tanning leather. The wood has occasionally been used in furniture, as firewood, or for making charcoal. Seagrapes are fairly pests-resistant and easy to care for. If you have a very bright window sill, this is the perfect place for the plant.
