Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants — over 2,000 species and thousands of cultivars — and it offers some of the most visually extraordinary foliage in the houseplant world. Rex Begonias display metallic, iridescent leaves in colours that seem impossible for a plant: silver, pink, burgundy, charcoal, and neon. Cane Begonias produce graceful, spotted leaves and cascading flower clusters. And rhizomatous Begonias offer textured, patterned foliage that rewards close inspection.

In Singapore, Begonias have a natural advantage. Our warm, humid climate mirrors their native tropical habitat, and the indirect light of most Singapore homes suits their understorey origins. With the right care, Begonias reward you with foliage that no other plant genus can match.

Types of Begonia

Rex Begonias (Begonia rex-cultorum)

Grown entirely for their extraordinary foliage. Leaves display swirling patterns in silver, green, pink, purple, burgundy, and black — often with metallic or iridescent finishes. The colours shift depending on the light angle.

Popular varieties: 'Escargot' (spiral-shaped leaves), 'Fireworks' (silver and purple), 'Red Kiss' (deep red with black edges).

Growth habit: Compact, mounding. 20-40cm tall and wide. Ideal for shelves and desks.

Care level: Moderate. More demanding about humidity than other Begonias.

Cane Begonias (Angel Wing Begonias)

Upright, bamboo-like stems with asymmetric, wing-shaped leaves — often spotted with silver polka dots. Produces pendulous clusters of pink, red, or orange flowers.

Popular varieties: Begonia maculata (silver polka dots on dark green leaves), Begonia 'Lucerna' (red-backed spotted leaves).

Growth habit: Upright and tall, 60-120cm+. Can be trained into a bushy or tree-like form with pruning.

Care level: Easy to moderate. Less humidity-sensitive than Rex types.

Rhizomatous Begonias

Grow from a thick rhizome at or just below the soil surface. Diverse leaf shapes and textures — some with pronounced surface texture, spiral forms, or striking vein patterns.

Popular varieties: Begonia 'Iron Cross' (distinct cross-shaped brown marking on green leaves).

Growth habit: Low, spreading. Often wider than tall.

Care level: Easy to moderate.

Light

Begonias are understorey plants — they thrive in filtered light, not direct sun.

Bright indirect light — Optimal. Best colour intensity, strongest patterns, most compact growth. Near an east or north-facing window.

Medium light — Good for most Begonias. Growth may slow slightly but the plant remains healthy and colourful.

Low light — Tolerated by some cane Begonias but not recommended for Rex types, which lose colour and become leggy.

Direct sunlight — Avoid. Begonia leaves burn quickly and permanently in direct sun. Even brief intense sun can cause bleached or scorched patches.

Artificial light note: Begonias perform well under fluorescent or LED office lighting, making them excellent office plants.

Watering

Begonias are more sensitive to watering errors than many common houseplants:

Schedule in Singapore:

• Allow the top two to three centimetres of soil to dry between waterings
• Every five to seven days for most types
• Slightly less frequently for rhizomatous types with thicker rhizomes

Technique:

• Water at the soil level — avoid wetting the leaves. Water on Rex Begonia leaves can cause spotting, rot, and fungal issues.
• Water thoroughly but ensure excellent drainage
• Never let the pot sit in standing water

Overwatering signs:

• Mushy, translucent stems
• Yellowing leaves
• Crown or rhizome rot (the most serious — can kill the plant quickly)

Underwatering signs:

• Crispy leaf edges
• Wilting
• Leaf drop

Humidity

This is where Begonias become more demanding than basic houseplants:

Rex Begonias: Prefer 60-70%+ humidity. In air-conditioned rooms below 50%, they develop crispy edges, lose colour vibrancy, and decline over time. Solutions:

• Group with other plants
• Use a pebble tray
• Small humidifier nearby
• Place in the bathroom or kitchen (higher natural humidity)

Cane Begonias: More tolerant. 50-60% humidity is sufficient — achievable in most Singapore homes, even with AC.

Rhizomatous Begonias: Moderate humidity needs. Similar to cane types.

Critical rule: High humidity must be paired with good air circulation. Stagnant humid air promotes the fungal diseases that Begonias are susceptible to.

Soil

Begonias need well-draining, airy soil:

• 50% potting soil
• 25% perlite
• 15% orchid bark
• 10% charcoal

The soil should drain freely and dry within a few days of watering. Heavy, waterlogged soil causes root and rhizome rot — the most common way to kill a Begonia.

Fertilising

Light to moderate feeders:

• Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every two to three weeks during active growth
• Reduce during any slower periods
• Avoid fertiliser on dry soil
• Cane Begonias benefit from slightly higher phosphorus when flowering

Pruning

Cane Begonias

Regular pruning is essential to maintain a bushy, attractive form:

• Pinch growing tips to encourage branching
• Remove leggy or bare lower stems
• Cut back overgrown plants by up to half — they regenerate well
• Root all cuttings (cane Begonias propagate easily)

Rex Begonias

Minimal pruning needed:

• Remove dead or dying leaves at the base
• Trim flower stalks — Rex Begonias are grown for foliage, and flowering diverts energy from leaf production. Many growers remove flower buds as they appear.

Propagation

Stem Cutting (Cane Begonias)

1. Cut a stem section with two to three nodes
2. Remove the lowest leaf
3. Place in water or moist soil/sphagnum moss
4. Roots develop in two to four weeks
5. Transfer to soil when roots reach 5cm

Leaf Cutting (Rex and Rhizomatous)

1. Cut a healthy leaf with its petiole
2. Insert the petiole into moist propagation mix
3. Or: lay the leaf flat on moist soil, make small cuts across the major veins, and pin the leaf down with toothpicks. Plantlets emerge at the cut points.
4. Keep in high humidity (propagation box or plastic bag)
5. New plantlets appear in four to eight weeks

Division (Rhizomatous)

1. During repotting, separate rhizome sections with roots
2. Pot each division in fresh, well-draining soil
3. Keep moist and humid until established

Common Problems

Powdery Mildew

White, powdery coating on leaves. The most common Begonia disease. Caused by poor air circulation in humid conditions.

Fix: Improve ventilation (a small fan nearby). Remove affected leaves. Treat with a fungicide if severe. Avoid overhead watering.

Leaf Spot

Brown or black spots on leaves, sometimes with a yellow halo.

Fix: Remove affected leaves. Avoid getting water on foliage. Improve air circulation.

Stem Rot

Mushy, blackened stems — usually from overwatering or poor drainage.

Fix: Cut away all rotted material. Let healthy cuttings dry briefly. Re-root in fresh, dry soil. Reduce watering dramatically.

Leggy Growth (Cane Types)

Insufficient light. Move to brighter indirect light. Prune to encourage branching.

Pests

• Mealybugs — the most common Begonia pest. Check leaf axils and stem joints. Treat with isopropyl alcohol.
• Thrips — silvery streaks on leaves. Treat with insecticidal soap.
• Spider mites — in dry conditions. Increase humidity, treat with neem oil.

Is Begonia Toxic?

Yes. Begonias contain calcium oxalate crystals. The tubers and roots are the most toxic parts. Ingestion causes oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing in pets and humans. Keep out of reach.
