Every week we spotlight one plant from our collection — its story, what makes it special, and everything you need to know to grow it well.

This week: Calathea (and the broader prayer plant family)

---

A Family Worth Getting to Know

Calathea is less a single plant than a world unto itself. With hundreds of species and cultivars, the genus offers more leaf variety than virtually any other houseplant family: silver stripes on round leaves, pink pinstripes on dark green, velvet zebra patterns, dark spots on wavy edges, leaves with purple undersides that reveal themselves when the plant "prays" each evening.

Each variety has its own personality. Once you own one, you typically want more.

> Singapore growing note: Singapore's tropical climate is genuinely ideal for calatheas — our year-round warmth and ambient humidity match the South American rainforest floor these plants evolved in. The main challenges indoors are air conditioning (which strips humidity) and tap water fluoride (which causes brown tips). Get those two things right and calatheas thrive in Singapore.

Before anything else: the reason calatheas are sometimes called "prayer plants."

Every evening, calathea leaves fold upward toward the stem, as if in prayer. Every morning, they open again. This movement — called nyctinasty — is driven by changes in water pressure in a joint at the base of each leaf stem called the pulvinus.

The evolutionary purpose is debated. Current theories suggest it may protect leaves from moisture loss overnight, or reduce grazing by nocturnal insects.

For plant owners, the movement is pure delight. A timelapse of a calathea through a day is one of the most captivating things in the plant world.

The Best Calathea Varieties

Calathea orbifolia

The most popular. Round, substantial leaves (up to 12 inches across on mature plants) with wide silver-green stripes alternating with darker green. The scale and pattern make it one of the most striking plants in any collection. Slightly more tolerant of lower humidity than most calatheas — a good starting point for new calathea owners.

Singapore availability: Widely available; regularly stocked at Tumbleweed Plants, Far East Flora, and Thomson Garden Centre.

Calathea ornata

The most dramatic. Dark, velvety green leaves with bright pink pinstripes (fading to white on older leaves) and deep purple undersides. The contrast between the dark surface and the pink lines is extraordinary. Slightly more demanding than orbifolia.

Calathea medallion / C. roseopicta

The most widely available. Oval leaves with a feather or medallion pattern in two shades of green, with purple undersides. Commonly found in garden centres. A good introduction to the family.

Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake Plant)

The most unusual shape. Long, narrow, wavy-edged leaves with dark oval spots on a lighter green surface — exactly like a rattlesnake's pattern. One of the more forgiving calatheas in terms of humidity tolerance.

Calathea zebrina

The most tactile. Velvety leaves with alternating light and dark green stripes. The texture is remarkable to touch. Needs higher humidity to look its best.

Calathea makoyana (Peacock Plant)

The most intricate. Semi-translucent leaves with a complex pattern of ovals and lines that looks almost like stained glass when backlit.

Maranta leuconeura (Prayer Plant — not technically Calathea)

The most forgiving. Red or green veins on oval leaves with the same prayer movement. Technically in a different genus but same family. Significantly more tolerant of imperfect conditions — a great starting point for someone drawn to the prayer plant aesthetic but not yet confident with calatheas.

Calathea vs. Maranta: What's the Difference?

| Feature | Calathea | Maranta |

|---------|---------|---------|

| Genus | Calathea (some reclassified as Goeppertia) | Maranta |

| Prayer movement | Yes | Yes |

| Care difficulty | Moderate–challenging | Easy–moderate |

| Leaf patterns | Extremely varied | Typically red or green veins on green |

| Humidity sensitivity | High | Moderate |

| Good for beginners? | With preparation | Yes |

If you love the look but are new to prayer plants, start with a maranta. Once you've got the rhythm of their care, calatheas are very achievable — especially in Singapore's humid climate.

A thriving calathea tells you it's happy in specific ways:

  • Leaves move reliably — opening in the morning, folding at night
  • New leaves emerge regularly — tightly rolled, unfurling over several days
  • Leaf patterns are vivid — not faded or washed out
  • Leaf edges are clean — no brown tips or crispy edges
  • Upright posture — leaves standing up, not drooping

A calathea with crispy brown edges and faded patterns is telling you something specific — usually low humidity or tap water fluoride. Address those two things first.

Singapore care priorities:

  1. Use collected rainwater or filtered water (not Singapore tap water directly)
  2. Keep away from air conditioning vents
  3. Bright indirect light — north or east-facing windows are ideal
  4. Check soil every 4–5 days (Singapore's heat dries soil faster than temperate climates)

---

The Honest Care Commitment

We won't pretend calatheas are easy. They have opinions about water quality, humidity, and temperature that other plants don't. But the care requirements are learnable and consistent — once you've set up the right conditions (filtered or rainwater, a humidifier or placement away from AC, appropriate light), the day-to-day maintenance is no more demanding than most houseplants.

The leaf patterns you get in return are genuinely unmatched. No amount of money buys more visual interest per leaf.
