The best soil for a large planter is one that is well draining, lightweight and nutrient-rich. Compost is a great option as it contains a variety of organic matter such as leaves, grass clippings and vegetable scraps which will slowly break down to provide your plants with essential nutrients. Perlite or vermiculite can also be added to improve drainage and aeration, while Sphagnum peat moss helps keep moisture in the soil without making it waterlogged.
